The second OxNet Languages seminar was led by Dr Amit Thakkar from Lancaster University on the topic of Europe's colonial past. The session caused participants to deconstruct the legacy of colonialism for Europe, and consider the implications of this for the identity of the continent, if it can be said that there is an overarching one. The sources that were analysed this week comprised post-colonial readings and 'The Battle of Algiers', a 1966 film which portrays the Algerian revolution against a colonial French government. A particularly interesting point was raised on the ways in which Algerians chose to portray themselves in battle, and the relationship between this physical presentation and the ability to carry out the violence that was required of them.
